Botswana rugby union had an event on Tuesday 6th September 2011 at Thebephatshwa. They were awarding the rugby players with certificates who participated in a rugby ready course that was held on the 12th and 13th of November this year. This course was held in order to inform and educate the players about the rules, skills and tactics that are being used in the sport.
The Major Patrick Moremi was the special guest who was invited to award the alumni. He thanked the BRU for the opportunity of being part of the event, as he is a fan. He said he used to play rugby during “his times”. “I believe and trust that rugby will continue to grow as it shows great potential, skills and knowledge of the “white football”, he said.
According to the development manager of the Union, Mr. Zilwele Khumalo who is the mentor of the course, he believes that the players with the content that they acquired from the information, they will have more idea of what is happening in the field, both as players and on the refereeing side. He said that complaints will be minimised in the field as players always feel that referees are cheating on them.
Giving vote of thanks, the captain of the Desert Whales, Makhabuza Oepile is grateful for the military general for his support not only in the military work but also in their sport. He is also thankful to BRU for the well done job they are doing; encouraging, teaching, coaching, informing and helping them in their games. With all this, now they have better knowledge and skills that they did not know. “I believe that the certificates will open doors of greater opportunities in the field of rugby, for example; we can be able to play or find jobs on international levels not only locally”, he said.
Closing the event, the secretary general Mr Mpho Masisi acknowledged the team for the good work in the rugby ready course, as it is the first team for running and completing it successfully. He also believes that indeed rugby is going somewhere.
