The Botswana Rugby Union was formed in 1992. It is affiliated to the International Rugby Board (IRB-1994), Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC-1997) and the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR-2000).
Club rugby has been played since the 70’s when it was predominantly played by non-citizens with few clubs. Ever since then the clubs have increased with some of them becoming dormant.
The game started being played in schools in 1996 on its introduction to 5 schools. This figure has grown to 105 schools majority of them are in the South Eastern region covering Mochudi, Gaborone, Ramotswa and Otse.
This has led to U19 and U20 national squads being chosen and playing against Soweto and Zimbabwe sides. Most of those players are either playing for the national U23 or the senior team today.
Botswana has played International rugby as far back as 1968 against Swaziland.
It was represented by non-citizens then. As of now, the senior national team 80% citizen played and enjoyed.
